A study of electrostatic solitary waves in electron-ion plasmas

There have been many observational evidences for the existence of electrostatic solitary waves (ESWs) in space plasma environments. Past particle simulation studies have shown that electron-electron streaming instabilities in a background electron-ion plasma may be responsible for the generation of most ESWs observed in space environments. In this study we carry out the numerical and theoretical studies of one and two-dimensional ESWs based on particle-in-cell simulations and fluid theory. The comparisons between the results based on one and two-dimensional kinetic and fluid models may help to clarify the physical processes of the formation of ESWs in collisionless plasmas.
