Detection of charge transfers in signle-electron box

A single-electron box (SEB) is made by two or more metal islands with insulating barriers in between, and electrons are allowed to move among the islands via tunneling. Here we present our studies on charge transfer dynamics in SEBs. Single-electron transistors are integrated next to a SEB to sense charge tunneling events in the box. We use SEBs as templates to investigate charge transports in superconductor/normal metal interfaces and nonequilibrium thermodynamics in small electronic systems.
