Effects of Calcium on Canine Cardiac Action Potential

It is well-known that changes in the extracellular calcium ion concentration ([Ca]o) modify the repolarization of action potential. Most studies have shown that elevated [Ca]o shortened the action potential duration (APD) and reduced [Ca]o prolonged the APD. In this study, a single cardiac cell is simulated by using the Hund-Rudy canine model. We will discuss the effects of changes in [Ca]o on the action potential and controlling of cardiac alternans under the change of [Ca]o. We will also compare our results with the experimental data.
