Gasochromic properties of sol-gel WO₃/V₂O₅ films by In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy

MoO₃, V₂O₅ and their multilayers MoO₃/V₂O₅, V₂O₅/MoO₃ thin films were prepared by sol-gel method with a spin coating technique. The morphology and the structure of the thin films were examined by scanning electron microscope and the x-ray diffraction, respectively. The gasochromic properties of the films were measured by in situ optical transmittance. These films exhibit rapid coloration upon reaction with hydrogen and can be used for application of hydrogen sensor. In situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy is utilized to monitor the change of atomic and electronic structure of the film during the gasochromic coloration. The results reveal that the rapid color switching of the film is attributable to the charge state and the local atomic arrangement.
